My mom is 59 yrs old and she has arthriritis of both knees…ie both in very bad condition…the doctor suggested getting both knees operated at the same time(4 DAYS apart)…but I read somewhere that recovery is very much delayed in such cases plus it’s difficult to do.anyone with any personal or professional experience please help!

Do both at same time, and get it over with. I had the choice when I had leg surgery. I am so glad that I chose to do it all at one time. One surgery time, one recovery time, and its over
Its a lot to deal with at one time, but I am so grateful that I done it that way.

The physical therapy is the important part after wards. Most people are off 4-6 weeks depending on what your job is.

What Is The Average Recovery And Rehabilitation Time For A Knee Replacement?

I’m a physical therapist.
Typically, people are in the hospital about 3 days after a knee replacement. Depending on how you’re doing, you may go home from there or go to a rehab facility. If going to a rehab facility, typically patients stay about 2 weeks after a knee replacement. Healing time can vary..staples are taken out after 2 weeks. Your range of motion comes back gradually in most cases, it can take anywhere from 4-5 days to 6 months to get back to ‘normal’. Most people are doing quite well after a month or so, and can stop using an assistive device (walker, cane, etc) to help them walk. Depends on how active you are now, how out of shape you are, and how motivated you are to do your exercises post-operation. It’s not an easy recovery, but worth it if you’re willing to put in the hard work.

this is personal advice, not medical advice
usually full range of motion is recovered over the first two weeks. at 6 weeks patients have usually progressed to full weight bearing with a cane. complete recovery from the operation involving return to full normal function may take three months and some patients notice a gradual improvement lasting many months longer than that.
