We tell our patients to premed for the rest of their lives. Some surgeons(that do the knee replacements) are telling patients that after one to two years there is no longer a need to premed. We feel it is better to be safe…than sorry.
(The premed guidelines, that we are recently aware of that are changing are for those patients with heart murmurs)

- The protocol for prophylactic antibiotics is currently undergoing some changes, but if your knee replacement was within the last 5 years I believe that it is still universally recommended to pre-medicate.

I answered this question earlier, so I am not sure if I didn’t give you what you were looking for or if you didn’t get it, but this is what I said…
Get your knee replaced again. I am sure that you knew you would have to have more than one since you are only in your 40’s. I have had 13 knee surgeries, so I know the kind of pain and discomfort you are in. You have done all the right things and taken all the right steps…you are very proactive and that is the most important thing. Don’t listen to your husband about the pain pills. If you need them to improve the quality of your life, you should take them. He is not in pain. I would tell him to shove it if I were you. If it hurts so bad that you cannot work and have trouble walking, you deserve to have every opportunity to ease that pain. Good luck to you. - Total Knee Replacement Performed 5 Years Ago. Just be prepared to have more knee surgeries. This is the thing with TKRs-they are more prone to complications than total hips. My opinion is you underwent TKR very early at 40. Lots of luck to you. - Total Knee Replacement At I.u Hopsital?
